What is a dead-headed pump?

A dead-head occurs when a centrifugal pump operates with no flow due to a line blockage or a closed discharge valve, causing a complete stop of fluid flow. When this happens, water is unable to exit and the same water continues to circulate, causing the temperature to rise. As the liquid reaches its boiling point and begins to vaporize, the excessive heat that is generated can crack, shatter, or compromise the elastomers of any bushings or mechanical seals, putting the integrity of the pump at risk.

What are the dangers of deadheading?

In extreme cases, deadheading can produce overpressure of hydraulic energy within the pump, leading to explosions.
