Altitude Valves And Modulating Valves

Altitude Valve

The Single Acting Altitude Valve closes at a preset maximum water level to prevent overflow of a ground storage tank or reservoir and opens to refill when the water level in the tank or reservoir lowers. This type of Altitude Control Valve should be used when the supply pressure is appreciably higher (15 psi+) than the head developed by a full ground storage tank or reservoir.

An altitude control valve controls the level of a tank. The altitude valve will remain open while the tank is not full and it will close when the tanks reaches its maximum level. The opening and closing of the valve requires no external power source (electric, pneumatic, or man power), it is done automatically, hence its name.

Typical applications include:

  • Single acting (one way): flow from ground storage to low pressure zone; altitude control valve (modulating): flow from ground storage tank back to supply
  • Since acting (one way): flow from tank to another system; altitude control valve (non-modulating type): flow from tank back to supply
  • Double acting (two way) altitude control valve (non-modulating type): flow from tank and back to supply

Modulating Valve

Flomatic® Corporation manufactures Modulating Valves (Altitude) that close at a preset maximum water level to prevent overflow of a ground storage tank or reservoir and opens to refill when the water level in the tank or reservoir lowers.

The modulating effect is evident only over the last few inches of filling so that a gradual closure is achieved. Because of this modulating effect, the filling rate will be relatively slow as the tank or reservoir water level approaches shut off elevation.
